1999年以來澳門研究的新趨勢——澳門研究年會2022主旨演講

I will argue that Macao Studies or knowledge production in Macao has been able to reinvent itself several times since 1999 or even earlier as a consequence of a changing set of developments. As I will sketch out, some of these are technical, and some are institutional. Still others owe to global trends in scholarship and shifting disciplinary concerns. And yet still others with respect to geo-economics, geo-politics, and scalar politics when it comes to connecting with Hengqin and the Greater Bay Area. In the following, I will set down some of these developments, flagging certain examples, making some evaluations, but also with an eye to the past because scholarship is mostly incremental where it is not highly innovative and/or revisionist. Hopefully, I will be able to expose some gaps in Macao Studies, where we can look forward to newer horizons. Although my title is “Tracking New Trends in Macao Studies since 1999” , still, I have to register the importance of leaps and bounds in knowledge production in Macao studies across recent decades. My discussion will range around four topics with a view to encapsulating major trends in Macao Studies even if there is overlap or crossover. First, I will examine local trends. Second, I turn to Mega Trends in social science studies touching Macao/China. Third, I examine Macao’s knowledge institutions for want of a better term. Finally, I reflect upon changing technologies around the digital revolution
