Abstract

Relying on the pivotal role of Macao and the abundant overseas Chinese resources of Canton Province, the Kwangtung Provincial Bank successfully set up a branch in Macao during the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in South China. As the only branch of the national and provincial banks in Macao, it remained in business until the end of the War. However, the MacaoPortuguese government strictly prohibited foreign banks from setting up branches to maintain the monopoly of the Atlantic Macao Bank. The Kwangtung Provincial Bank had to operate under the name of “Guangji Yinhao”, identifying itself as a non-governmental entity. Objectively, this private status helped to dilute its official background, which not only met its strategy of smoothing remittance circulation in Guangdong Province and accumulating overseas remittance resources but also helped the Chinese government maintain contact with the outside world, to better gather resources for the war of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
