Abstract
鄭觀應能成為引領西學東漸的思想先驅,離不開他對英文的熟練掌握。鄭觀應放棄科舉、赴滬學賈之時,就利用夜間的空餘時間,於1866年到1868年5月20日期間在英華書館進行了為期兩年的學習。傅蘭雅的嚴謹態度和他對傳播西學的熱情,使鄭觀應獲得了優質英文教育及西方文化熏陶,不但為他開闊國際視野、掌握西學知識奠定了基礎,也提高了他對教育的重視。在這段交往中,鄭觀應對中西方文化的適應與融合體現出了一種雙重性,他既努力為國家自強尋找出路,又在與西方的接觸中找尋超越性的價值。

Zheng Guanying’s mastery of English was indispensable to his becoming a pioneer in leading Western learning to the East. When Zheng went to Shanghai, he used his free time at night to study for two years at the Shanghai Anglo-Chinese School between 1866 and May 20, 1868. John Fryer’s rigorous attitude and his enthusiasm for the spread of Western learning helped Zheng access to quality English education and Western cultural inculcation, not only for him to broaden his international perspective, master the knowledge of Western learning laid the foundation, but also to improve his attention to education. During this interaction, Zheng’s adaptation and integration of Chinese and Western cultures embodied a duality, as he was striving to find a way for national self-improvement while finding transcendent values in his contact with the West.
