非正式住宅：二十世紀澳門都市形塑過程中的 契機及過渡媒介

The informal sector appears with the formation of capitalist society and modern urban system, and then alters along with their changes. It is the reflection of the state power and the elites under capitalism. It also is the frontier of urban development and social reformation. Macao was a Portugal colonial city located in the shore area of South-Eastern China. During the twentieth century, Macao was marching to modern society, in the progress of industrialization and urbanization. Macao had a unique population structure composed of a high proportion of the maritime area population and immigrant in the twentieth century. Also, the pressure of housing applied had kept accumulating due to waves of migration. To levitate and redirect the overwhelming housing demand, an informal housing system had been developed. This article aims to reveal the formation of informal housing in Macao city during the twentieth century, starting by analyzing the social feature of the possible core consumer of the informal housing, as well as the vacancy left by the formal housing market. Then further the study on the three types of Macao’s informal housing, which are boats, shanties, and subdivision housing. According to the research, Macao’s informal housing during the twentieth century was not just a self-help tactic that simply resulted from the property; it also was a channel for the outsider and socially marginal groups to get into the interior of the urban system. Furthermore, it acted as the primal stage of urban tissue to motivate the evolution of the urban system, being the essential articulation between the different social stages.
