This study examines the validity of exposure theory and adaptation theory by investigating the evolution of Macau residents’ gambling behaviors. The results support the hypothesis of adaptive theory. Based on the prediction of adaptive theory, the interest for gambling of a population will gradually decline in the future, which may lead to a slowdown in the growth of the gaming industry. In response to the impact of the people’s adaptative behavior towards the gambling, Macau needs to plan ahead and develop non-gaming industries that will bring new tax and employment opportunities to Macau to reduce the risk of the gaming industry’s decline. Macau also needs to develop more non-gaming entertainment facilities to keep Macau attractive to tourists. Gaming operators need to constantly innovate in casino games to keep visitors fresh on gaming.
