1844 年在澳門半島簽訂的中美《望廈條約》，在美國外交史上開創了建立片面治外法權的先例，標誌着美國走上了在亞洲太平洋地區擴張的帝國主義道路。一個多世紀以來，研究者從不同的角度，反覆探討這個條約的歷史意義。本文聯繫美國外交史研究領域的最新進展，扼要地評介有關《望廈條約》與美國東亞政策起源這一課題的學術著作。
The Sino-American Treaty of Wangxia signed in the Macao peninsula in 1844 established the precedent of nonreciprocal extraterritoriality in US diplomatic history, representing the beginning of a new era in American imperial expansion in Asia and the Pacific. For over a century, this treaty has been a muchstudied subject in the literature of early US-China relations. Researchers often view this subject in the context of their own historical period. This essay intends to critically review the scholarship on the first US-China treaty and the origins of the US policy toward East Asia in terms of the present concerns of this academic field. |
