In his legendary life, Ke Lin, the inaugural director of the Kiang Wu Hospital, immersed himself in underground activities in Hong Kong and Macao for many years. Drawing on Ke’s memoirs, as well as newly discovered journals and newspaper materials, this article provides a description and a discussion of some important aspects relating to Ke’s medical practice and social activities prior to his appointment at the Kiang Wu Hospital. Ke studied at the Guangdong Public Medical School from 1921 to 1926 and worked at the Canton Hospital after graduation. In 1929, he obtained a medical license in Shanghai under his original name Ke Huie, with a registered address at the prominent pharmaceutical company in early 20th-century Shanghai, the International Dispensary. In December 1930, Ke moved to Hong Kong and opened the Nam Hwa Pharmacy in Sham Shui Po the following year. There, he befriended Zhang Ruobo, who was also from Haifeng County of Guangdong Province, and advertised his pharmacy in Zhang’s South Star Magazine, revealing glimpses of Ke’s medical practice in Hong Kong. Between June and September 1936, Ke relocated to Macao. Following the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Ke led the Macao Overseas Chinese Association in Macao, an organization believed to be an underground branch or affiliate of the Chinese Communist Party. During this period, Ke was active in various social welfare and charitable activities.
