Abstract |
From the new perspective of the monetization of silver in the Ming Dynasty, the paper takes Dali, Yunnan as the center and re-analyzes the historical process of the disappearing of Yunnan seashells as currency. By studying the connection of the southern silk road and maritime silk road, India ocean trade, the monetization of silver in the Ming Dynasty — the reform of taxes and corvée – finance, as well as the global history of the interaction between China and the world, the author proposes that in the 16th century when globalization started, the seashell currency was initially disappearing because of silver, and the whole process was made up of two phases: during the first phase, seashells lost their position as the dominant currency and were replaced by silver and then lost the status of fractional currency and were replaced by copper cash in the second phase. Thus it is concluded that the disappearance of seashell as currency is a typical case classifying Yunnan into the overall monetary system of China and global history. |
