Abstract

The 1850s to the 1870s, it was the peak period for Chinese workers to be sent to Cuba. About 150,000 Chinese workers were trafficked to Cuba as coolies. Under the influence of Spain, Macao became the main port for Chinese workers to be sent to Cuba and as a “source of coolies”, in which the Macao-Portuguese authorities had played a special role. Restricted by Macao laws, Chinese workers needed to sign contracts before going abroad. These contracts were different from what they appeared to be. Contracted Chinese workers had no power to prevent their fate of abuse. This proposal attempted to research the issue of contracted Chinese workers going to Cuba based on the collection of more than 300 contracts, including the role of Macao in the process of contracted Chinese workers being abducted and trafficked to Cuba, the signing process of coolie contracts, and other related issues.
