“A Touch of Alienation in the Celestial Empire” is a monumental work on the study of Macau history. It is the first time that Chinese scholars have made academic achievements by using large-scale original archives in Chinese and Western languages. It contains politics, judicature, military, urban construction, religion, technology, education, medical hygiene, language, literature, art, sports and social customs of Macau in the 16-19th Centuries and they are closely related to each other. It systematically displays the Western Civilization in Macau, with a grand historical narrative concept and all-round view. This book embodies the author’s strict style of scholarship and accurate textual research. Moreover, it also brings forward many new problems and draws many new conclusions. For example, the research on “Macau street” and “parish”, the criticism of the popular view that it is the Jesuits who established the Inquisition in Macau, the discussion of the time of Shakespeare’s entry into China and so on.
