Macau, as an inherent territory of China, practiced the legal system of China before being gradually occupied by Portugal. After the Portuguese occupation of Macau, the laws applied in Macau were mainly Portuguese laws. Since 1976, Macau has enjoyed a certain autonomous status as a special region under the administration of Portugal, and Macau has had local laws only since that time. In 1987, with the signing of the Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration, Macau entered the transitional period of its return to China, and the laws of Macau also ushered in a good developing opportunity, and the localization of laws became an important task in the transitional period of Macau. In 1993, the Basic Law of Macau was promulgated, which promoted the localization of Macau laws in the transitional period and created conditions for the smooth transition of Macau. On December 20, 1999, the Basic Law of Macau came into effect, and Macau laws entered a new historical developing stage. Since Macau’s return to the motherland, the Macau Special Administrative region has made good use of its legislative power, enacted a large number of new laws, and made great progress in the construction of the legal system, thus providing a reliable legal guarantee for the prosperity and stability of Macau.
