晚清貴州教區教務長童文獻考

Paul-Hubert Perny (Tong Ouen-hian) was a French missionary of the Paris Foreign Mission Society. He was also a renowned sinologist, naturalist and thinker and he served as provost of Kouy-tcheou Diocese from 1853 to 1860, adopting a number of new measures with clear accession to the development of the Catholic Church, which solidified the foundation of a new diocese in Kouy-tcheou. In addition, he introduced a large number of Chinese species to Europe, proposed the establishment of a Euro-Chinese Academy in Hankou, generalized Chinese language and culture, and presented the idea that “China is superior to France” (La Chine supérieure à la France ). The research covering his main activities and thoughts reveals the great complexity of the Sino-French cultural relationship during the second half of the 19th century.
