The “2024 Summer Student Researcher Training Programme” jointly organized by the Centre for Macau Studies (CMS) of the University of Macau, the Macau Model United Nations Promotion Association, and the Macau Observatory for Social Development (MOSD) of the University of Saint Joseph, has successfully concluded. The program attracted 20 university and high school students from Macau. It aimed to provide Macau students with opportunities for academic research and discussion, enhancing their interest and abilities in research.
The training program commenced in May 2024 and lasted for three months. Initially, the participants attended theoretical research courses covering research ethics and design, literature review and academic writing, quantitative research methods, qualitative research methods, and policy analysis. Following this, they were assigned to two centers for a five-week research practice.
After completing the training and practical sessions, the participants were divided into seven groups to conduct research on Macau. Among them, three groups consisting of eight students were guided by Dr. Wong Wai Kei and Dr. Cheong Sio Pang from the Centre for Macau Studies. Their research topics were: “Factors Affecting Destination Competitiveness: A Case Study of Macao Six Old Districts”,“ Migration of Burmese Overseas Chinese from a Push Pull Theory Perspective: A Case Study ofBurmese Overseas Chinese in Macau (1960-1980)” and “Analysis of the Living Resilience of Macau Residents during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Reflections on a Theoretical Framework”. The students compiled their research findings into written reports and presented them at the graduation ceremony held in August.
At the graduation ceremony, Prof. Agnes, Lam Iok Fong, Director of Centre for Macau Studies of the University of Macau, expressed her delight at the students’ progress and research levels. She encouraged the students to apply the research methods and knowledge they had acquired to achieve greater success in their academic pursuits.
This training program not only enhanced the students’ research capabilities but also provided them with a platform to showcase their talents and engage in academic exchange. We look forward to more students participating in such activities in the future, injecting new vitality into Macau’s academic research.
